Luigi and Maria Zoia, ancestors of the current owners, migrated from Padua, Italy, to Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada in the early 1900s. They brought with them a strong work ethic and a commitment to family that would shape generations.
Luigi and Maria built a large boarding house in Canada, providing room and board for fourteen boarders. During the Prohibition era in the United States, Luigi served his homemade wine to guests, earning the nickname “The Bootlegger” in the neighborhood. This nickname would later inspire the name of the restaurant in Las Vegas.
At just nine years old, their granddaughter Maria moved in with her grandparents to help with cooking and cleaning. This early experience laid the foundation for her exceptional culinary skills.
From Niagara Falls to Las Vegas: A New Chapter
In 1936, Maria married Albert Perry, a young man from Niagara Falls, New York. By 1943, the family made a bold move west to Las Vegas for health reasons. At the time, Las Vegas was a dry, dusty town with little fame. But it was here that Maria and Albert’s lives would change forever.
By 1944, Maria’s cooking and Albert’s friendly personality led them into the restaurant business. They worked at the Fiesta Villa Ristorante, a hotspot for Hollywood legends like Howard Hughes, Clark Gable, Jane Russell, and Clara Bow. This experience helped them refine their skills and understand the vibrant culture of Las Vegas.
